The Great British Sheep Did you know there are more than 60 breeds of sheep in the UK - the most of any country? From the woolless Easy Care to the hairy Herdwick, and the ickle Babydoll Southdown to the mighty Lincoln... The Great British Sheep is our project celebrating UK sheep, wool and handknitting. We call him George. |

Over the summer of 2008 we asked people to contribute to this unique project by creating a very special 'knitted fleece' made entirely from 100% British wool - from the Shetland Isles to the tip of Cornwall. Designer Yvonne Stone created for us a giant sheep sculpture, wire-framed and naked! With knitted squares and shapes, loopy stitch swatches and crocheted ringlets we and covered him with his very special woolly jumper. |

Our launch of The Great British Sheep took place at The Alternative Village Fete on London's Southbank on Saturday 5th July 2008, and continued at our knitting tent at Camp Bestival over the weekend of July 18, 19 and 20. Visit our online photo gallery to see the knitters in action and George's progress. From finger-knitted garlands around his neck to glorious intarsia swatches, George's unique British wool fleece grew and grew. |
